Team/Role Overview

An opportunity has arisen in the Belfast Markets Legal Department for a prominent in-house counsel role to support key Sales and Trading businesses primarily the FX, LM and Commodities businesses. This role will involve working closely with internal clients as well as Sales and Relationship Managers and Citi Product Legal Counsel/Country Counsel in negotiating, reviewing, and analysing legal documentation for the key businesses in which we support. 

What you’ll do

The position will require a strong awareness of the impact of core regulation on the derivatives markets and underlying documentation. Alongside this, you will be helping senior management to build and lead a team to attain high performance standards, with a focus on supporting continuous improvements in operating practices and processes, including identifying efficiencies, improvements, and opportunities.

The overall objective of this role is to provide legal support, advice, and guidance across a broad range of practice areas.

  • Responsible for providing legal counsel to the Business, participating in strategic initiatives, providing subject matter expertise and interpretations of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and industry practices, and advising business management on legal matters impacting the business.
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behaviour, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards.
  • Assume informal leadership role acting as an escalation point within the Belfast Markets Legal FX, LM and Commodities Team on specific Corporate ISDAs and related matters. Act as the senior Legal contact aligned to the FX, LM and Commodities business working with key stakeholders to closely manage priorities and handle deal specific and episodic trade documentation.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of process improvements, through liaising with internal stakeholders such as Risk, Client Risk Facilitation, Client Onboarding, Regulatory Reform, CVA, Operations and Legal.
  • Partners with legal peers to objectively evaluate business proposals by applying institutional knowledge and risk appetite against industry standards, widely accepted business practices, laws, rules, and regulatory guidelines, escalating as appropriate.

What we’ll need from you

The successful individual will work on reviewing/negotiating a broad range of standard legal agreements but must also be comfortable to use bespoke documentation structures. 

  • Banking or financial industry experience, including laws related to banking regulations.
  • Qualified Lawyer with relevant industry experience.
  • Knowledge of international laws, regulations and practices while staying abreast of regulatory and legal environment, internal policies and industry trends that impact the business.
  • Experience of negotiating commercial contracts.
  • Experience in the negotiation ISDA Master Agreements and other agreement types mentioned above is desirable.
  • Proven track record in delivering results in a challenging and changing environment.
  • Experience with complex deals, demonstrated ability to analyze issues and develop legal solutions.
  • Ability to effectively organise own workload meeting key milestones and to work autonomously.
